Tulip Season is Here!

Why We Love These Charming Spring Beauties

There’s something about tulips that feels like a deep breath after a long winter. When they pop up in the garden or appear in a fresh bouquet, you just know spring has arrived. But beyond their cheerful petals and candy-colored hues, tulips have a few surprising quirks that make them one of our favorite flowers of the season.

Tulips Have a Mind of Their Own

If you’ve ever placed a bouquet of tulips in a vase and come back a few hours later wondering what happened, you’re not imagining things—they move! Unlike many cut flowers, tulips continue to grow after they’ve been cut, sometimes gaining an inch or more in the vase. They also have a charming tendency to droop and lean toward the light, giving them a whimsical, ever-changing shape.

And the best part? They often straighten back up overnight—like little botanical yogis doing their morning stretches.

This movement is part of what makes tulips feel so alive. They won’t sit still and behave like a traditional bouquet, and honestly, we love them more for it.

How to Care for Cut Tulips

Tulips are fairly easy to care for, but they do appreciate a few special touches:

  • Cool water is best. Fill your vase with fresh, cool water. Tulips are thirsty and will drink quickly, so check the water level daily.

  • Trim the stems. Give them a fresh angled cut before placing them in the vase—and if you re-trim after a few days, they'll thank you.

  • Support is optional. Some folks like to add a floral frog or grid to help keep them upright, but part of the tulip charm is letting them dance and sway naturally.

  • Keep them cool. Tulips last longer in cooler temperatures, so avoid placing them in direct sunlight or near heat sources.

  • Don’t mix with daffodils (at first). Daffodils release a sap that can shorten the vase life of tulips. If you want to pair them together, condition the daffs in a separate vase overnight first, then arrange.

How Tulip Bulbs Are Produced

Tulip bulbs aren’t just one-and-done. In fact, it takes several seasons to produce a high-quality bulb for resale. Here’s a peek at how it works:

  1. Start with a healthy bulb. A large, disease-free bulb is planted in the fall.

  2. The bulb blooms in spring, sending up that gorgeous flower we all know and love.

  3. After blooming, the flower is often removed (this process is called "topping") so the plant puts its energy into bulb production, not seed-making.

  4. The bulb stays in the ground for several weeks, growing and multiplying underground.

  5. In early summer, the bulbs are dug up, cleaned, sorted by size, cured (dried), and stored until fall planting season rolls around again.

The biggest, healthiest daughter bulbs are sold to gardeners and flower farmers to keep the cycle going.

How Flower Farmers Harvest Tulips Without the Bulb

Here on the farm, we’re not growing bulbs for resale—we’re growing stems for bouquets! That means we do things a little differently.

When harvesting tulips for cutting, we gently pull the entire plant from the soil with the bulb attached. Then, we simply snap off the bulb and compost it.

Why do we harvest this way? Because it gives us the longest possible stems, which are perfect for bouquets and arrangements. Tulips don’t branch, so once the bloom is cut, that plant’s flower-producing days are done anyway. It’s a one-time show—but oh, what a show it is.

Come See the Tulips!

Tulips are stealing the show right now at the flower stand. Their soft petals, graceful stems, and unique personalities are a true celebration of the season.

So next time you bring home a bunch of tulips, don’t be surprised if they decide to do a little dance on your kitchen table. That’s just their way of saying, “Spring is here, and we’re ready to party.”
