impatient for spring

8-10” of snow acts as insulator for the seedings.

This winter, the polar vortex has brought us bitterly cold temperatures that feel like single digits, snow in Cape May (can you believe it?), and more cloudy days than sunny ones. But every day, the daylight stretches a little longer, bringing us closer to the end of these frigid temperatures.

The plants pre snow.

Despite the wintery conditions, life on the flower farm marches on. Our cool-weather flowers, planted late last fall, need extra protection from cold, windy days. We're also busy sowing seeds that will be planted as soon as the fields are ready to work. And, of course, there's the never-ending battle against weeds—yes, even in winter, they manage to grow (ugh!).

Look at these fancy tulips to look forward to!

Dreaming of our earliest spring blooms always lifts my spirits and gives me something to look forward to. This year, we planted several hundred more fancy narcissus, added specialty peony-type tulips, and, of course, our beloved ranunculus and anemones. I can’t wait to see these beauties bring their magic to life in just a few short months!

Ranunculus always makes me happy.
